    Default PC help

I know it prob doesnt belong in this forum but most ppl read the general chat.

Im looking at getting a new computer and I need help on processors.
What is the best single core processor available? and if i got a dual or quad what would i have 2 get 2 live up 2 the higest single core on mir. I currently run a dual as a single core system which is obviously just a waste but better for mir.

Orderd a pc 4 my bro earlier, not really expensive but will still be better than mine as its 3 years old now.

    Cheers
    /Rich

They have stopped producing all single core CPUs as far as I know. You will get much better performance from a duel or quad core machine. This is the best of the single cores ever made.

    Pentium Extreme Edition 965
    Frequency 3.73 GHz
    Packaging 775-pin PLGA
    Vcore 1.25-1.4 V
    Bus frequency 1066 MHz
    Typical heat dissipation 130 W
    Core stepping C1
    L2 cache 2 MB + 2 MB
    Production process 65 nm
    Hyper-Threading Technology Yes
EM64T (Enhanced Memory 64 Technology) Yes

You would be needing to buy an old mobo like the P4P800 or something, which will be second hand and malfunction. You'll be buying an old CPU which may have already passed it's MTBF. This kind of kit is in no way value for money. You may find one kicking around on eBay but I really don't understand why you'd want a single core machine.

just want the fastest system to run single threaded programs really e.g. mir

if 1 of the newer dual or quads will beat 3.73 on one of its cores then happy days

I've seen alot of the i7 range reach 4.0Ghz without any problem. The 975 and 980 can both hit over 4.5Ghz without water cooling. I know people who have taken an i7 to 5Ghz+ but that was on a test to destruction.
The way the new processers are made, I am pretty sure for the price you'll get overall better performance from a multi-core machine.
CPU is not the be all and end all of a machine, if you want a Mir-only machine you'll want alot of powerful RAM since there has always been a bug with the way Mir deals with RAM. The new mobo's with 6000,12800 and 16000 RAM are very good.

Personally for a Mir only on the cheap PC, I'd get an i7 920 or 960 @4Ghz on air, a 32GB Solid State Drive, Some DDR3 RAM (corsair probably) and the rampage II since it's a dream for overclocking. Stick in an ATi card to cut the costs down and 500GB HDD for storeage.
