Actually, in a round-about way you can. You can make gems with the craft lady with platinum and gold ores, as well as a few other ingredients, and then take those gems to the npc in st maze to make them into orbs. It's not really worth doing though, as you still have to mine for the ore, use the craft lady which sometimes fails and then pay for the upgrade into orbs though. You'd be better off hunting for gems/orbs or just cash to buy them with.
